Strictures are areas of abnormal narrowing of the gastrointestinal tract. Most strictures occur in the esophagus as result of acid reflux disease. The physician is usually able to dilate the esophagus with the passage of a series of dilating tubes designed for this purpose, and dilation of the esophagus back to a normal size may require more than one session.
